Circulate This: Stories from the School Library
*Fast forward to 20:00-24:00 of the audio file to
hear local author
and former MBUSD parent April Halprin
Wayland describe how
school librarians connect students to literature. Thanks, April!
*California School Library
Association Past President Connie
Williams,
a high school teacher librarian, and
radio producer
Joe McHugh,
who is also a songwriter and storyteller, collaborated on the
audio journal project to capture stories from
teachers, school administrators, children's authors, legislators,
parents, and students about how
well-stocked and staffed school
libraries
make a difference in the lives of children. Connie orchestrated
and arranged the project, Joe interviewed and captured the stories;
both made magic happen when they put it all together.
*Listen to and share the stories!

The Grand View Elementary School Library in Manhattan Beach, California, is a stimulating place where students can acquire knowledge and gain insight; an inviting place where children can seek respite from a demanding day; a magical place where they can open books and open their minds for a better tomorrow. Manhattan Beach is a vibrant seaside community full of small-town charm located close to Los Angeles International Airport. See a one-page summary of our school district: MBUSD At a Glance.
The Library was renovated
extensively in 2000-01 and serves about 750
students in grades Kindergarten through 5. Holdings include books, magazines,
art prints, videos, and music CDs - roughly 18,000 items. Library
services have been automated since 2000 using
Follett Library Resources.
The Library is staffed with one library media specialist. More than
eighty parent
volunteers assist with day-to-day operations. During the school year
2009-10 approximately 34,300 items were circulated.

map of the Library.
Library supporters include: the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation; the Grand View PTA; the School Site Council; the Manhattan Beach Historical Society; the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club; the Grand View Student Council; and individual donors. Donations of gently-used children's books are always welcome. They may be added to the Library collection, distributed to Grand View teachers for classroom use, or donated to other schools in need.
In 2009-10
Paws 4 Healing therapy dogs
visited the library some Mondays after school to listen to stories read by
students.
The program will continue in 2010-11 with 2nd graders reading during lunch
recess by invitation.
The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis
collected data about the positive effects reading to therapy dogs has on
reading fluency.
